Osama bin Laden's Death

Having heard President Obama's speech several hours ago, I've noticed two very different and opposing reactions. The initial reactions to the news were pride, happiness, and celebration, but very soon after a different reaction surfaced about how upsetting it is that a man's death has generated so much joy and excitement. This CNN article states that

"Half a world away, the scene outside the White House was of pure jubilation.

Hundreds reveled through the night, chanting "USA! USA!" Others chanted "Hey, hey, hey, goodbye!" in reference to the demise of bin Laden. Many also spontaneously sang the national anthem,"

which is exactly what second reaction was disturbed by. The death of Osama bin Laden has given many closure and a sense of relief from the possibility of Osama leading another terrorist attack, but is it morally corrupt to get so much enjoyment out of his death? Do you think it shows a dark and vengeful side of the world we live in?

  1. I agree with you Sahar, I feel it is a bit sickening that we have come to a time in this society where we celebrate the death a person. I agree the the fact the Osama Bin Laden has dies has allowed the victims of 9/11 can now rest in peace, but the cheering and the constant hoping Osama continues suffering is unacceptable. I feel that the morality of death no is subject to the type of the person the deceased was.

  2. Yeah I think it does sort of bring up a dark and vengeful side. We take pride in the fall of our enemy, and what they're showing us is that the only way to be victorious is to overtake your enemy. Proverbs 24:17 tells us, "do not gloat when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles". On the surface, we can rejoice that the world is a little bit safer. But is this only temporary? I think it's important to consider how Iran will react to this?
