Our class will keep a blog, visible to anyone in my two sections of the course, which will enable us to extend our conversations with one another outside of class. This assignment encourages you to write about things that interest you, including the relation of the ideas in this course to questions in the “real” world.
You can expect to comment informally on this site at least once a week, as well as contribute two formal posts during the semester (one before and one after Feb. 21).
A few guidelines will serve as our covenant for the tone of these conversations.
Formal posts should
1. Articulate original ideas (with a clear thesis)
2. Reflect thoughtfully and critically on assigned texts.
3. Be well organized and well written.
Informal posts should
1. Comment on another post or threaded discussion (or)
2. Introduce links, current events, media, etc. relevant to our themes.
Other guidelines
1. Blogs are often conversational in style, but this is not an excuse to ignore the formal rules of writing. Follow standard rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
2. You are encouraged to draw connections with things outside of class (on-campus lectures, news stories, popular culture, etc.). If you include links to images, videos, or news stories, explain its relevance: what is the link, and why did you post it?
Above all, be respectful.
1. Avoid making generalized assessments about individuals or religious groups.
2. Be mindful of the religious diversity of the classroom setting. You may bring your religious background into conversation with course materials, but be careful when using the words “us” and “we” that you do not assume a monolithic audience.
3. It will be helpful to remember that RS 102 is an academic, not a religious, setting. Support your claims by using texts, reason, and experience to persuade your classmates: “I see things this way, because …”
Enjoy!
