Crusades

After our activity in class today about the Crusades, I have new insight towards the whole movement. First off, the motivation behind the crusades was wrong from the beginning and when people began to realize it, it was too late. Also the pope can be blamed because of the high illiteracy rates and the sense of ignorance about outside religions. He was the one telling the people what he felt God would want, even though what he was saying was false For example, the Christians did not know know anything about the Muslims; all their assumptions were wrong and way off from the truth. furthermore majority of the crusaders were not literate and killed for no actual reason.

  1. I think it is difficult to say that the Crusades were wrong even though all the evidence makes it look that way. It is just so difficult when someone, especially someone high in power, claims that God told them to do something. How can you counter that? How can you prove that that is not true? Does that person have ultimate power? Cant they claim that God told them to even if he didnt, and if so then how do you prove that God did not tell them to do it? If the pope told me that it is what God wanted, I would probably not do it, especially if it meant killing someone, but I would be wondering if I made the right decision because the pope told me to do it.

  2. I agree with Virginia when she says that it is hard to say that the Crusades were completely wrong. I also don't think that you can blame the entire crusades on one individual, that being the Pope. Yes, he did have influence over a great amount of people but that doesn't mean he should tell everyone to start killing others. I guess my question would be, why didn't someone stand up and stop the violence? Were the muslims and christians to proud to step down and stop the massacre?
